Main objectives :
The Food, Environment and Society Program is a transdisciplinary
program based in the Department of Rural Sociology at the University
of Missouri. The program teaches MU students, performs research
on contemporary issues, aids in conflict resolution, and participates
in outreach and public education projects. Its key goals are:
- Protecting and managing local food systems and environmental
resources
- Promoting sustainable development and sustainable communities
- Understanding barriers and facilitators of change
- Enhancing the capacity of local institutions
The Food, Environment, and Society Program maintains a strong outreach
dimension through direct involvement of Extension personnel and
the participation of Program faculty in Outreach and Extension efforts.
Program activities are enhanced by linkages to Community Development
and the long-established involvement of Rural Sociology in communities
around the state. Current activities have statewide impacts through
a number of initiatives, including:
- Community Food Systems
- Sustainable Agriculture Extension Program
- Community Development Program
- Citizen Education and Leadership
- Water Quality and Natural Resources
- Food Circles Networking Project
