Main objectives :

The University of Helsinki is by far the largest university of Finland. The teaching and research at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, one of the ten faculties in the University, is based on the principle of sustainable use of natural resources.
The department of Economics and Management at the University of Helsinki is an education and research unit in agricultural economics and policy, food economics, household economics and environmental economics. The objective of the department of Economics and Management is to maintain the high standard in the research and teaching, according to the principle of sustainable development. The department considers that the development of rural areas is the cornerstone for living conditions in general in the society-wide context. Hence, it is important to preserve the viability of rural areas.
Consequently, the aforementioned issues of sustainable development and rural livelihood are closely connected to the preservation of traditional production activites in the Finnish rural areas, and this, in turn, relates closely to the issues of origins of farm and food products, their labelling and PDO/PGI products.
The team, in this project, in order to obtain more information about problems related quality issue and the certification activity, will be supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MMM), the Union of Rural Advisory Centres (MSKL) and probably also the Finnish Food and Drink Industries' Federation (ETL), all located in Helsinki. They all play important roles in the planning, extension, information and knowledge diffusion of issues related to quality systems and origin labelling of agricultural and food products in Finland.

PURE FINNISH
This leaf and flag symbol is the brand for Finnish vegetables, berries, fruit, potatoes, mushrooms, flowers and nursery products. The cultivators and packers have committed themselves to the fact that products sold under this symbol are almost absolutely free from residues of pesticides. The products are of the First Quality class or of Extra class. When cultivating these Pure Finnish products the environment is especially taken care of. The Pure Finnish-symbol is the symbol of the Finnish Horticultural Products Society.

Research reports of the quality of vegetables, potatoes, berries and fruit are published. The Society has also published a guidebook called "Quality Requirements for Vegetables". The horticultural products marked with the leaf and flag symbol are almost free of pesticide residues. The average Finnish consumer gets annually only 0,0005 grams of pesticide residues from domestic horticultural products. Several Finnish farms have already received the ISO-9002 Quality Certificate.

Intense co-operation is performed between the Society and institutional food service units and market chains. We have published a guidebooks called "Hevi-pokkari" and "Hevidekkari" for further education of the market personnel.

The Society also exercises a wide information service. We are well represented in exhibitions and publish regularly press releases of current horticultural products of the season. We also print brochures and recipes for consumers.

Research is a vital part of our activity. We follow thoroughly the comsumption of vegetables, potatoes and flowers. Distribution of reliable research reports on comsumption quantities and consumer prices. Comsumer as well as commercial attitudes are also followed regularly.

Product development is promoted by active research and competitions.
