Main objectives : Interventions, training courses and studies for Local Development

IN LOCO Association was legally created in August 28 of 1988. According to the regulations its activity has the following objectives: promote local development as a process of improving the cultural and material standards of living, through community-based initiatives; promotion and full enhancing of human and material resources in the Serra do Caldeirão, bounded with local people, all personalities and institutions who care about Community Development.

  • Development must be based in the determination and knowledge of individuals and groups, prompt to fulfil the deed of improving the quality of live in the communities where they work and live. This process must be regarded as a conquest of full citizenship and as a groundwork to build a participatory democracy.
  • Development should be achieved through a creative synergy between local people and professionals operating in the exterior, local organisations and public services, tradition and innovation.
  • Development should be fully understood, participatory, integral and integrated, contributing to stronger local activities, associated with the demands of both commercial enterprises and social solidarity.
  • Development should be presented in an ecological perspective, capable of protecting and enhancing natural, social and cultural patrimony.
  • Development must be based on a process of constant education, suitable to create a culture of its own and, at the same time, generating a social and cultural project.
  • Europe's construction cannot only be about agreements between nations and treaties between great enterprises, should, on the contrary, stand up through a permanent interaction of projects of cultural, social and economical nature, assembled and controlled at a local and regional level.

Main objectives :

  1. To determine the optimal economical slaughter time for lambs and kids of Portuguese breeds;
  2. To develop an objective and non-evasive method for measuring lamb and kid in vivo body composition;
  3. To develop objective lamb and kid carcass classification system, thereby eliminating judgment errors from subjective evaluations;
  4. To assess carcass quality based upon consumer acceptance;
  5. To determine the factors that affect carcass quality of lambs and kids.

  • Prof. Alfredo Jorge Costa Teixeira,
    He is a Vice President at Polytechnic Institute of Bragança since 1999. He has been Director of the Agrarian Superior School of Bragança (1995), Co-ordinator Professor at Agrarian Superior School of Bragança (1991), Professor at Agrarian Superior School of Bragança (1988) and 2nd Triennial Assistant at Agrarian Superior School of Bragança (1987). He is graduated on Zootechnic Engineering (1984), Master in Animal production (1988) and PhD. in Agrarian Science/Zootechnic (1991).
    During the last years he carried work in the sheep and goats carcass composition as well the utilisation of ultrasounds to estimate carcass composition.

Main objectives :
The DEESA (Department of Agrarian Economy and Sociology Studies) is one of the 14 Estaçâo Agronomica Nacional Departamento. The Estaçâo Agronomica Nacional, located in Oeiras, near Lisbon, is a national centre of research. The DEESA is composed of 12 elements holding doctorate degrees. It should be stressed that DEESA has a policy which stimulates the development of strong communication linkages with other institutions, both at the national and the regional levels, in the research and policy making worlds : University of Lisbon, Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro and Algrave, national and regional departments of Agriculture Ministry.
The Department DEESA has been involved in several research projects, some of them involving European partnerships. Among the research topics are :

  • adding value to traditional and labelled farm products,
  • diversification of the rural economy in mountain areas,
  • analysis of rural and farming systems.

Main objectives :
The main objectives of the Dairy Science and Technology Unit of DTPA since 1980 is the study and improvement of the technology and quality of the Portuguese traditional dairy products, namely PDO cheeses, using raw milk from small ruminants.

The National Agricultural Research Station (EAN) is an INIA unit where the scientific research aims, both the resolution of our agriculture's real problems as well as the ones regarding new ways to improve quality of life.

Main objectives :
Estação Zootécnica Nacional (EZN) is the organism which promotes and carries out Research and Development (R&D) activities and training in Portugal, with special attention being given to the promotion of science and the development of technology in animal production.

EZN collaborates in the Master Course on Animal Production along with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Lisbon. This institution also provides facilities for professional training and gives direct technical support to the community, namely breeder associations.

EZN is a scientific multidisciplinary Campus in animal production. EZN is divided into Departments. EZN is made up of three farms for livestock breeding, as well as for agriculture and forest development. These farms comprise a total area of 600 ha. EZN has 350 workers among whom 28 are researchers and 11 are senior technicians.

Main objectives :
The Universty of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is a public University located in northern Portugal, Vila Real. The researchers UTAD are integrated in the Economics and Sociology Department. They have developed research work on production systems, social construction of quality, consumer behaviour and preferences, marketing, marketing and strategy, and product commercialisation. They are currently involved on a research project on the "Strategies to add value to Endogenous Agri-food Products", studying the case of OLP products benefiting from EU protection (DOP, IGP). The main objectives of the project are :

  • to evaluate the socio-economic importance of such products,
  • to characterise the organisation of the supply process,
  • to study the distribution channels,
  • to assess the demand and characterise the consumer profile and preferences,
  • to define strategies regarding the future development of this particular agri-food sector.
