Main objectives :
The " Istituto di Economia Agraria e Forestale" of
University of Parma has been involved in many research areas. In
particular, the research team of Parma has a considerable experience
in the field of agro-food chain and in the evaluation of the effects
of agricultural policies at regional level through the development
of mathematical models. The research branches cover the following
aspects :
quantitative analysis of the agro-food system by means of inter-sectorial
charts;
analysis of co-ordination and management forms of certain supply
chains, in particular the supply chains of some typical products
(e.g. Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and Parma Ham), of some vegetable
products and of the most important cereals;
analysis of the birth and development of agro-food districts;
analysis of effects of CAP and its reforms with reference to OCMs
affecting the supply chains under examination;
analysis of quality management (product and process quality) within
the companies involved in the supply chains examined.
In these areas of research, the team of Parma co-operates with some
regional institutions (Regione Veneto and Regione Emilia Romagna)
in the elaboration of regional rural development projects and quality
policies. Over the last few years, the research activity has been
focussing on some local and national typical products and their
main issues (Parmigiano Reggiano, Proscuttio di Parma). This knowledge
made possible to organise the 52 nd EAAE Seminar, focussed on the
policies about PDO products. The contribution will regard the articulation
of rural and agricultural development at territorial level, particulary
the relationship between the processes internal to the primary sector
and the rest of socio-economic contex. Also the research team will
provide experience related to the organisation of the market of
some famous OLPs.
Recently, the research unit was involved in research concerning
the effects of the Agenda 2000 in the rural areas of Regione Veneto
and the introduction of Regional labelling of organic production
in Emilia Romagna. Some members of this unit are also involved in
other research related to the diffusion of part-time farming in
Emilia Romagna and the evaluation of the effect of new technology
for some typical production like Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and
Parma ham. All the team, at the moment is involved in other European
Fair Project : Eurotools (related to the use of mathematical tools
for policy analysis) and Medafor (related to the study of the dry-areas
process in some rural areas of Europe).

Main objectives :
The Research Centre for Animal Production (CRPA) has been founded
as a public institute in 1971 with the specific task to co-ordinate
research and extension service programs on animal production in
the region Emilia-Romagna. During the eighties, the Centre started
to expand its activities carrying out research programs itself.
Most of the activities of the Centre has applied research directed
to farmers and the processing industry. Research results are being
disseminated by national agricultural reviews and own institute
leaflets. The Centre employs 30 researchers, 10 technicians and
5 persons involved in administration and is organised in eight research
units : agronomy, environment, economics, livestock production (cattle
and pig husbandry), software development, machinery and farm buildings.
The current research topics are :
The profitability of pig, dairy, beef and poultry farms in the
Po- Valley
Economic aspects of environmental problems caused by intensive
animal production
Profitability analysis of cheese dairies
Economic performance and strategies of Parma ham firms
The economics of PDO and PGI products
Analysis of the interaction between rural development policies
and farmer's initiatives
Economic analysis of quality assurance schemes in the beef industry.
CRPA research is involved in many research projects at regional
and at the European level. It has contributed to the regional product
specifications of Romagnola beef and castrated lamb, to the estimates
of the production costs for the main animal products for representative
farm typologies, to the development of farm management software
programs to the evaluation of value added in the supply chain of
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Parma ham.
Actually the Research participates as a associated contractor in
the EU project: "The Socio-Economic Impact of Rural Development
Policies: Realities and Potentials" (FAIR CT98-4288) which
has the general aim to assess and quantify the potential socio-economic
impact of new rural development processes within the EU.

Main objectives :
The department of Economics is the major centre for economic
studies of the University of Florence. The economics of the department
carry on a very diversified research activity within the following
macro areas : agricultural economics, political economics, industrial
economics, international economics, development economics, public
economics, economic policy, economic geographical and history of
economic thought. The research activity uses an interdisciplinary
approach focusing amongst others, on the problems of local development,
agricultural systems analysis, environmental policies and sustainable
development. The research activity is carried out in close collaboration
with other local, national and european research centres and institutions. The
Department supplies 42 teaching courses in 33 different economic
disciplines within the Faculty of Economics, which has around 7000
students.
Within the department of Economics, the group of agricultural economist
has acquired considerable experience in the fields of agro-food
system analysis, inter-firms coordination mechanisms and in the
evaluation of the effects of agricultural policies at regional level.
In these areas of research, the team of Florence co-operates with
some regional institutions in the elaboration of regional rural
development projects. Over the last few years, the research activity
has been focusing on some local and national typical products and
their main issues (Tuscan extra-virgin olive oil, Chianina beef,
spinach, flowers). The members of the unit have taken part in many
research projects on OLP, funded by local, regional and national
institutions.
Therefore, the team will contribute to the action providing the
results of its researchers on OLPs. In particular topics covered
are :
OLP consumers' behaviour and evolution
analysis of OLP supply chains and marketing channels
role of public institutions in the promotion of OLP within rural
development strategies.
In order to obtain more information about problems related to quality
issues and certification activities, the department of Economics
will be supported by ARSIA (Agenzia Regionale per lo Sviluppo e
l'Innovazione in Agricoltura). This public agency, at the moment,
supports the certification of many important PDO/PGI products in
Tuscany and is involved in supporting Regione Toscana in the implentation
of rural development policies.
